How to Deal with Skunk Odor
Last year we had the privilege of having 13 skunks at our work place. Skunks are cute animals, fun to watch, but the smell became unbearable at times. Coming into work and finding myself face to face with a very large skunk at 5:00 a.m. is not the way to start any day. So, we had a company come out to catch the skunks and release them into the wild.
The first day I checked the traps, I saw a cute little raccoon trapped. I really debated on whether to release the raccoon myself or call the company. They charge $75.00 a trip so, me being the company man I am, I decided to release the raccoon myself. When I got close to the cage the raccoon roared so viciously that being a company man wasn’t so important all of a sudden. Eventually I did let the raccoon out. When I opened the cage I ran one way and the raccoon ran in the opposite direction. My respect for raccoons jumped way up there with the likes of the saber tooth tiger.
Finally, after a possum and a few stray cats, we did captured some skunks. We called the company out and they took the skunks and released them in the hills. Talking with the guy who catches the skunks I learned that skunks can pinpoint their spray. They try to spray the face or they can spray a broad area for a quick escape. The skunk’s spray is an oil based compound mixed with sulfuric acid. It sticks to whatever it comes in contact with. A skunk can spray 8 to 15 feet.
We do 8 to 10 jobs per year where dogs, who get sprayed by a skunk, run into the house and rub up against carpets and upholstery trying to get the smell off. The result is everything smells like skunk spray.
To handle the problem we have to use a germicidal cleaning agent which breaks down the oil and neutralizes the sulfuric acid. As long as we clean everything the dog has come into contact with, we get good results removing the odor.
As far as cleaning the dog, clean as quick as possible. The longer the spray stays on the dog the harder it is to get out. I recommend Nature’s Miracle Skunk Odor Remover. If you have pets and you’ve experienced skunks, it would be a good idea to keep a couple of bottles on-hand in case of an emergency.
Why Choose Quality Carpet Cleaning?
Our organizational structure allows us to deliver the same or better quality of service as any of the major companies out there for a much lower cost. We invite you to compare.
There’s no secret to doing what we do. There are industry and manufacturers’ standards. There is certified training. There are apprenticeships. The best equipment and cleaning solutions are available to anyone. If you strip away all their attempts to distinguish themselves, you will find that all the top companies essentially clean how Quality Carpet Cleaning does because it’s what works best. A rose by any other name is still a rose.
Quality Carpet Cleaning has thousands of independent reviews on sites like Yelp, Angie’s List, Google, the BBB and various other review sites. These are not reviews we collect on our site where we can filter and control them. Thus, though we are rated highly everywhere, not all of our reviews are great. However, you will see that when a problem does pop up, we go out of our way to make things right with the customer.
If you are unhappy for any reason, we will gladly come out and re-clean any area you are not happy with.
We at Quality Carpet Cleaning appreciate how important your time is and give it the highest priority. We schedule ideally 3, but no more than 4, jobs per day for each technician where other companies schedule up to 6. In this way our technicians have plenty of time between jobs and don’t have to rush through a job to get to the next.
All our products are safe for kids & pets. What most people don’t know is that California regulations are so strict that many cleaning products sold in other states are not allowed to be sold here. Some standards even go beyond “green”. That said, we also carry a line of green carpet cleaning products for hyper-sensitive people.
